Hi,

Just out of interest, I decided to open a thread on this topic. How did you get your first horse? Was it love at first sight?

Unfortunately, I can't contribute yet...no horse! But I love hearing from others.

My Grandfather had horses and I rode his first. The first horse of my own, I sold my 4H calf and bought an appaloosa that I had for 20+ years.

I bought my first horse off a dealer. He was rearing in the crossties, tried lunging at me when I free lunged him and tried kicking the dealer while he was being led; told the dealer to wrap him up! LOL Absolute love of my life Smiler

Love at first sight for sure! I tried out about 10-15 horses and almost bought maybe 2 or 3, but something stopped the sale some how.

Then I went to look at a very young and very green tbxperch who was just learning to canter. We (coach and I) decided she was too young and too green for my mum and I and asked the trainer if she had anything else for sale that she knew of. She told us that she had her own horse for sale, a 1/2 arab, 1/4 saddlebred and 1/4 appy who she didn't have enough time for. (She hadn't ridden him in 3 weeks!) So in a crazy blizzarding snow-storm, we all drove out 45 minutes to a barn with a coverall arena. The lady went out into the field to get him, and the moment he walked into the barn, my mum and I both smiled. He was perfect. He still is Smiler I've had him for almost 8 years! I can ride him over a 5'6" hedge, and my mum can easily plod around the ring on him.

Phew... that was longer than I thought!

My mom bought our first horse for us to share when I was 14 and we were both into the riding thing. She was an 18yr old ex barrel races that wanted to go fast and faster and hated jumping, but she taught me how to be a "real" rider, more than any coach will Smiler

my first horse I got when I was 5, my mom owned the riding barn and she bought me the mare because she was about 18-19 year old bay thoroughbred mare who had broken her croup in an accident on the crossties and she nursed her back to health. she taught me alot! had her until I was 9, then gave her away to a friend with only one immature little three year old who needed a baby sitter. I loved her Smiler I'm 15 now and I think shes still alive!

Your mind before the race:
80m run
8 hurdles
34 steps
12 seconds
1 start line
1 finish line
1 gun shot
1 winner, the rest losers

Now try thinking about it when it is acually happening.

I got my first horse when I was around 8-9 years old. She was an older Appi mare. In her carrer she had been a really good gamer but I definately think she was abused because when we got her she was extremely head shy and nervous. We basically bought her out of a rocky field in the country. She had bad bruising in her feet and was suffering from bad malnutrition. When I started riding her she was very lame. So I got her through that. After I got her better another beginner lady bought her where she only recently died this past summer. Frowner

She was one of the kindest horses I have ever had. Such a champion for going through all that and still trying to teach me as a beginner. She'll definately be missed dearly, for her time was too soon. Frowner

I'm racing on a track without a horse. I'm bull fighting in a ring without the bull. Track and Wrestling is my life.
