haha...that so called "blow-up" was because the "judge" placed a horse 1st! A horse that reared straight up(not a little rear, a huge one) right in the middle of the class!! And the "blow-up" was not at all about not getting a ribbon, it was about the shoddy judging. When the judge was approached about why she placed a rearing horse in a hunter class, we were told to suck it up, it's only a fair!! Completely different incident that what is being talked about here. This horse was a danger to all in the ring at the time(green hunter class, btw) A judge who knows the rules and follows them, as is the case with the RSS, is completely different than a judge who blatantly ignores the safety of others, IMHO.
Edited to add: I certainly agree with comments made that we all pay the same fee and should be judged fairly. This was a clinic type show, though, no? So things are a little different than they would be at a show where no feedback is given.

Well as was stated by several well known horse people at that particular show that when you have to pick the best of the worst what can you do? At least the horse that reared did everything else correctly. Everyone else was riding runaways or could not get a correct lead to save their lives. There were major temper tamtrums from 3 people but the others were all satisfied. I guess that you cannot please eveyone at any show.

I beg to differ...in the class with the rearing horse, which was green hunter under saddle, one horse in particular did not put a foot wrong. He placed second, which I found "odd" as he went beautifully, and did not rear or cause any danger to anyone. Nothing can be said by anyone that can justify placing a rearing horse first in a hunter class.

I was at that show(Arnprior Fair) and I can say I did complain about the judging. I rode my canadian mare who has a cute jump, got all her leads and chiped in maybe once in a stake class (I think(there was like 100.00 in prize money)). I placed 5th where a very cute pony went through dissunited, and a horse the broke to the trot and ran through the lines placed before me. When I went to ask the judge what I could impove on and why I didnt place better she said that this was not a trillium show.. and that it was a fair. I felt that this judge was trying to spread the ribbons around but thats not what horse showing is about. haha I dont even know what this show has to do with it, but I did see that horse rear and Deannas horse went amazing and she should have placed higher.
From what I see riders should be treated equally no matter of their abilities or the horse that they are riding. Any practise of spreading out ribbions or judging someone else harder because of their experience and ESPECIALLY VOICING THAT OVER A MICROPHONE shows poor ability of the judge to do their job. A judges job is to erase any preconceive notions about the horse/rider combination and judge the round based on the performance at hand.

Thanks Rosenstar! Jay was a superstar that day so I know those previous comments were not about me. To me there is NO justifying placing a rearing horse, it should have been asked to leave the ring...And about this so called "blow up" at the show....I also asked the judge what I could do to improve in the ring and I got the exact same response Rosenstar did...She just looked at me and said "it's a fair" like it was no big deal...whatever though, this thread isn't about arnprior fair it was stupid that it was even brought up.

Oh yes, it must have done everything correctly and then decided to rear because it was going in the relaxed manner a hunter should go. It was probably grinding its bit biding its time before it had it's blow up. A rearing horse is dangerous to everyone and should never have placed, even if it were 6 in the class the 6th place should be with held, they should not be rewarded for such dangerous behavior. This makes me sick.

um... I went to them last year, and I remeber them alternating, that may not be the case this year but I am not sure. The second judge that they usually have is Vicki Andrews (sp?) I think but I donno, dont quote me on it
Oh. We've only been to about three of the shows, over the course of 3 years or so. We're just going to get our young ones out and about in a show atmosphere, see how they handle it before heading to the schoolings.

They did alternate judges 2 years ago from show to show. Last year it was the same judge for each show.

Why are people still complaining about Arnproir Fair and the Thistle Ridge show that happened weeks ago now? Let it go and move on. Their is nothing that you can do about it now anyways.

It's been two weeks since the last post about the fair or the other show. People have moved on,and are back on topic.
