I have no arena at my farm, so I am looking for a place with an arena to board a horse for the winter (Nov-Mar), where the owner could continue to take lessons with her own coach.

Horse would otherwise be available for 1/2 lease or for use in other lessons. "Pinky" is a great little school horse, and is perfect for beginners. Just looking for a way to keep her going this winter and to keep the owner's lessons going.

Boarding must be in west end of Ottawa within 20 mins of Kanata.

Incidently, if I do find a place, it means I have indoor board available for the winter. Reasonable rates. Ashton area.

I'd suggest Spindrift in Almonte, about 25min from Kanata. Great place, welcoming atmosphere, indoor arena, and lesson program. Plus everyone is so friendly! Check out their website or send an e-mail

I would be thinking that you would need to board in place that allows outside coaches, but also has a lesson program in order for horse to be used in lessons.

I think that would be tough to find as most barns that have lesson programs do not allow outside coaches. You might consider a "bring your own coach" place, but then you would need to find a part lessor if that is what you were thinking in offloading the cost of board.

There are several barns in the area that you are interested in that allow this kind of arrangement. Four Leaf and Starlit in the Richmond area come to mind.

I have also heard wonderful things about Fortune View Farm in Dunrobin.

Best of luck. Hope that it works out for you.

You could check with Stubbe Horse Farms. They are in Richmond/Ashton, have boarding, indoor arena - not sure about coaches or whether they need additional lesson horses at the moment. A nice place with nice people!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I will be following up on many of them, although I would love to go to Spiritwood (where her coach is), it's just too far (unfortunately).

Keep in mind, Log-off, that if you have good coach and can convince her/him to travel to a place that allows outside coaches...then that has certain benefits to the boarding facility.

For example, it may attract other boarders to the facility if they are interested in using the same coach. For your student, it may reduce the expense of the coach's travel if others want to take lessons too.

Best of luck. Hope it works out.

I take my horse to Stubbe Horse farm in the winter. I would definitely recommend there! Great place, and great people! She has good prices, and offers indoor and outdoor board.

Thanks everyone. I found a place that will use Pinky in lessons, provide a weekly lesson for the owner, and allow the onwer to bring in their own coach as well (once a month for free, or additionally at a nominal fee). It's 10 mins right up the road at Shahadaroba Farm in Almonte. Nice facility and nice people. Now I am looking for someone to board at my place, but will post that separately.

Cheers, Trish Smiler
