But I have a Jeep Liberty with 5000lbs towing ability, can it tow a two horse bumper pull or will I end up upside down in a ditch?
Although I've ridden for years I know nothing about trailers and towing other than knowing how to drive me horse to the show. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated |

i too drive a jeep liberty and i asked my husband the same question about it...he says it depends on the trailer and the horses. a smaller, lightweight trailer with a couple of ponies in it might be alright...but it's risky with the short wheel base & top heavy nature of this vehicle.

You can try maplelawn trailors as well. I think that they are located in Carleton place. They say that suv's can tow them they are super lite.

Not with my Maplelawn, it would most certainly end up in a ditch if someone attempted to pull it with a SUV. |

The Brenderup Dealer is called Maple Lane Trailers. It is in Smith Falls. |

It's got so very little to do with just the pulling power - I could PULL our heavy steel 2H bumper-pull with the 4-wheeler...however, I could not control it or stop it on the highway!
The dealers are nearly ALWAYS wrong about this. There are some GM reps who have now been trained in the requirements for trailer-towing - ask around, perhaps. As was said, you need to consider the weight of truck, trailer; power, length of wheel base of towing vehicle, etc. Maybe try asking some of the different trailer dealers, eg Topline Trailers? They sell plenty of brands used, and perhaps less likely to push you towards one make. There's also a very good trailering forum - can't remember the name, but I'm sure you can find it with a google search. |

Agree with Shuggie- stopping and maneuvering a trailer full of horses is a lot of weight, especially if there are hills. I think the trailer would push a Liberty around. Also to consider is the transmission- everyone I've know thats pulled with an SUV has ended up with transmission problems within a few years. If its just occasionally and on relatively flat ground you might get away with it...

When I saw Maplelawn trailers being light I almost snorked up my salad...My Maplelawn trailer was so nice and heavy that my 6.2 diesel Chev went through two transmitions...mind you it was an all steel four horse, but they were all(prior to 1996) built by one guy (a prison dentist) as a hobby. Now I believe someone bought the company and they are production trailers (still nice though).

ditto everyone else re: safety. It may work, and you might get away with it but it is NOT safe. The 5000 lbs towing capacity is not based on live weight which is a whole 'nother ball game.
It may pull and it may be fine majority of the time but when you need it, it will not be able to stop or manage a swinging trailer with a freaked out horse. I've seen many upside down in the ditch because the trailer swung and chucked the light truck. SUV's and ligth trucks aren't made to do this type of work. They don't have the tranny, wheel base or braking power. |

Thanks everyone. I knew that this would be the answer, but needed to prove my boyfriend wrong, lol.

Well let's just say I was glad with my heavy Maplelawn gooseneck that today I had a 2500 Dodge because I drove up and down some pretty amazing hills to pick up a horse and bring it home for a friend. If you ever trailer up between Eganville and Killaloe you don't want no small vehicle pulling a trailer. At one point you could smell the rubber burning on the brakes, yikes. I had the electric brakes up too almost full on the trailer to help the truck brake going down some of those hills, 14% grades. And the horse weighed a good 1400lbs.
But hey I'm not upside down in a ditch because I have a heavy truck. Even if I was pulling a light trailer I wouldn't pull with anything lighter than what i have now. I hate it when I see vans and suv's pulling trailers, visions of dropped transmissions or worst brakes that can't hold the weight of the trailer. And it's Harmony Trailer sales near Smith Falls on Hwy 15 selling Featherlites and Brenerup in Smith Falls. |

Sorry that's what I meant, Maple Lane in Smith Falls. Harmony sells only the Featherlites.
