Anyone know of a feed store/tack store that sells buckeye brands around Ottawa?

Thanks

Melanie

Sorry Melanie...there are not any in this area. We have looked.

To find the "closest", go to the Buckeye website and/or contatct the company.

Not the news that you were looking for, but I hope that it helps.

Yep. Glory is right...I did the same thing last year. You could contact a small feed store and see if they will carry if for you. If you can prove the demand they might bring some in...

I know a few people for sure, and two more on here. Purina's and master feed NSC levels are way too high for a few of my laminitic clients and I would assume there are a few people in the same situation. I have seen some horses that are on Grow N Win and they looked great! I would be willing to drive to pick some up.

have you looked into brook's feeds? They offer low starch/carb feeds as well.

For your laminitic clients, would they be ok on a mainly hay diet with a vit/mineral supplement?

*ack* I'm running late again!

I did look into brooks feeds...didn't like how hard it was to get a list of ingredients.

As for a hay diet-that would be ok if theses horses could eat hay (older 29++ with very few good teeth left).

I found a close enough supplier for buckeye-I'll be making the trip to get this feed.

Thanks for the info!

I switched to Buckeye a few months ago and am very, very happy with the results-my yearling went from leaving grain in the bucket (eating was a chore for her) to nickering at feeding time(for the first time ever), and will pretty much mow down anything in her path to get at the new stuff. She's starting to look a lot better. Call Kasia-she's been really helpful.

Sorry to take so long to reply. Beth's dates keep changing, which is frustrating, but I will let you all know as soon as I have something solid.

Riverglen, wait no longer - for the babies, feed 2 pounds of Brooks Phase II and 2 pounds of Brooks Allphase per day, unless body condition score is greater than 5, in which case you would remove the Phase II. Brooks - great CANADIAN feed.

Thanks Warmblood. I have looked at the Brooks feed and opted not to go that route. I am now investigating Buckeye. ;-)

We were interested in switching to Buckeye but Kasia never got back to us...too bad...we ended up switching to Trimax (Purina) and have been happy. Interesting to note that many GP jumpers are now using it too...

Riverglen...just curious what you don't like about Brooks Feeds (KER)?

And melaniem...if you need a list of ingredients in Brooks/KER feeds, it's all available on their website, and if you need more info, email them.

And verve...follow up with Kasia - she's a busy woman, but very helpful if/when you can get a hold of her!

Shuggie-
If you could post the webpage where Brooks lists the ingredients, that would be great, because I've had no luck finding them.

I did ask twice for an ingredients list from Brooks feeds-no luck with the email on the website or by calling. I have also heard of impaction issues with this feed from my vet in young horses yet I have heard nothing but good things with Buckeye.

Shuggie, I looked all over the Brooks website and couldn't find the ingredient list. I didn't see anywhere where the guaranteed analysis for the feeds was listed either.

As for why I chose not to go with Brooks, my research indicated that it isn't the right feed for me for a variety of reasons. Also, I did get mixed reviews about the feed from people that I know who use or have used it. And yes, that did weigh into my decision not to switch to Brooks.

To be honest, I am quite happy with the Blue Seal feeds that I am using at the moment. Buckeye interests me because I've heard nothing but great things about their Gro'N Win product. And so, I investigate... Wink

Oh and verve, I did reach Kasia. She's been very good about responding to my queries via e-mail. I have a phone number for her as well if you're interested (I can send it to you offline).

Call Tania Laframboise, the Brooks equine nutritionist who works out of the Embrun Coop at 613-443-2946, (ext. 6). Her email address is tanial@coopembrun.com. Her knowledge of the product and of equine nutrition was a big factor in my switching to Brooks years ago. Furthermore, she visits my farm for free on a regular basis to measure/weigh the horses and to make adjustments to the rations. Tell me of another feed company that provides that level of service.....
The free annual Brooks feeder meeting was held last Wednesday at M&R Feeds in Arnprior. The Brooks representatives and Tania enlightened us on many topics, and I felt privileged to be in attendance.
In my opinion, any vet suggesting that this feed or that any other brand of feed, causes impaction issues is exposing a lack of expertise and tact. Who is this vet?
Brooks is a Canadian company that uses Canadian ingredients. In this poor economic climate, isn't that worth something? Keep your business close to home.
I have never heard of Buckeye Feeds until this thread......
I think Blue Seal Feed is about the worst feed one could offer a horse......
Fire away.

Well, Warmblood, all I will say on this is when it comes to feed, like so many other things involving horses, to each his own. It really comes down to what works for you and your horses.

For example, I've never had an issue with Blue Seal. And in fact, my horses have never looked better. I've received the same kind of service from the Blue Seal Equine Nutritionist that you've gotten from the Brooks rep. She's always available by phone and does farm calls as well. She develops the horses' diets using our annual hay analysis as the starting point. So you see, Brooks is not the only company that offers this service. I expect there's probably a Purina nutritionist floating around out there too. Wink

I think Purina is crap yet others love it and wouldn't feed anything other that the Purina HF/HF feed. Go figure Big Grin

As for Buckeye, it's been around a long time. And as I said, I've heard nothing but great things about it. The biggest problem has always been that there isn't a dealer in the Ottawa area. I have several breeder contacts in the Toronto area that swear by this stuff and haven't had a case of OCD or other DOD since using Buckeye feeds. I'm sure you could find people that could say the same thing about other brands of feed as well.

So, like I said, whatever works for you and your horses...

Oh and with respect to the impaction issues, this isn't the first time I've heard of such issues being linked to Brooks. The other issue that was linked to it is choke incidents. Whether there's validity in these statements or not is a different argument altogether and not one for me to decide.
