What remedies are you guys giving to your horses with allergies? My young 4 year old was diagnosed with allergies, suspected dust and spores. He coughs once in a while while being ridden. I've been giving him BREATHE, but don't think it is working all that well. Any suggestions? The vet said to just keep him on wet hay and off round bails, which is also already being done.

I had the same problem, not an official allergies diagnosis tho, but put Lexi on the alpha omega respi-free and it has worked MUCH better than the breathe... Breathe seemed to do nothing at all, but this stuff seems to keep it down to almost no coughing at all... who knows if it is actually working or just that she has gotten used to the environment... but....

Absence: where do you get the Alpha Omega respi-free? Do you still have to wet your horses hay?

Actually, the product name is Omega Alpha, and you can get Respi Free at Greenhawk...and I think Horseworld. Anyway, it is readily available in Canada. The Omega Alpha line is a great product line that was developed in Canada. As to wetting your horse's hay...I think there are more factors that go into that decision than the supplement...such as quality of the hay (dust-free) as well as the airflow in the barn, how he (or she) is being fed outdoors, etc. Best of luck. |

I'm kind of in the same boat with my gelding... Have you tried antihistamines? Also, my vet said that depending on the situation, a round of antibiotics may be needed to clean things up.
If the coughing now happens mostly while riding (I assume indoors at this point), you could try cutting the sock part of a pantyhose and putting it over your horse's nostrils to lessen the amount of particles that enter his airways. |

Woodstock -- nope, not wetting the hay, haven't changed the environment at all. We tried antihistamines and an immune booster which didn't help nearly as much as the respi-free. Vet had come out and we were going to do prednisone or an expectorant (excuse my spelling) but I had just started the respi-free and it seemed to be working... she coughs very rarely now..
It could be timing, the time of year or a multitude of other reasons as well, but, I'm pleased with the results I've had... |

Thanks guys for the suggestions and I'm definately going to go pick up some Respi Free. The vet is coming out to have a look at him again and we'll see from there. He is now kept outside as much as possible and on top quality hay. Hardly any coughing at all when being ridden now, but I want it to be back to 100% asap anyhow.
