Get help from a knowledgable person before attempting. Get a friend, or better your coach to show you how to lunge a horse and to supervise.

If you type "how to lunge horse" to google, several web sites with instructions come up, e.g. http://www.wikihow.com/Lunge-a-Horse. Some Youtube videos may give you some ideas as well (watch out for the bad videos).
Is the horse that you are trying to lunge new to lunging as well? If you are both new, then it gets a little bit more challenging. On the other hand, if you have a horse that has been lunged before, it is easier for you to get started.

he's not new to it, i'm the newbie.

he's got a rugburn/sore on his withers and i want to give it a break to heal up. i've got 2 pads there too but for some reason the saddle seems tipped forward too much. anyways i'd like to lunge him so he can get some exercise and i can keep working with him, without aggravating the sore.
