My horse has quite suddenly come up with rain rot. she has small bumps, like scabs almost from her mid back to almost her tail, and on the back of her hind legs, above her hock. I was just wondering if theres any treatment for it thats been effective. My horse has very sensitive skin, and is prone to mud fever, but as far as I know has never had rain rot.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great

Uhg! Hope had this REAL BAD only once. Iodine did a world of good, along with fungasol. Try and get her brought in in the worst of the rain weather if you can.

Your mind before the race:
80m run
8 hurdles
34 steps
12 seconds
1 start line
1 finish line
1 gun shot
1 winner, the rest losers

Now try thinking about it when it is acually happening.

Try washing her/him in the medicated Mane and Tail shampoo it seemed to help when I had a rain rot problem. If you do heavy work outs and they are quite sweaty try just spraying them off so the sweat doesn't just sit there and irritate the pores. Smiler

I read somewhere that baby butt rash cream worked well.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one with this problem. Never had it before but my mare has it bad. I have done the medicated shampoo thing and have been keeping her in. As for the iodine suggestion, what do you do--pour it on all the areas? Could this also cause her to become a bit sluggish--she is old and retired. Her colour is also grey, if this makes any difference. How long does it take to cure?

Ugghhh I hate rain rot. It is basically the same thing as mud fever except on the body instead of the legs. For the legs iodine, zinc, bag balm, or baby powder works well. For the body, iodine works well too but stains white horses, the best thing to do is get some rubber gloves and rub MTG in it and scratch it all out, the more you pick off the better.
