Hi Sarah,
Mud fever is caused by an infection due to Dermatophilus congolensisin wet muddy conditions. Due to all the rain the paddoc has gotten quite mucky in some areas. The best thing to do bathe to remove the scabs, and keep her legs clean and dry. (empahasis on dry!) this is what it says in my horsey vet book! I hope she's ok! Rachel. |

I use zinc cream and that seems to work within a few days. I apply a thick coat of it over all the sores and scabs after a good cleaning with iodine soap.

Sarah, that back paddock is quite muddy right now. Call Erin in the morning, and maybe ask to have Ricki in the sand ring. Get some chlorohexidine soap and wash with that. Then apply the zinc cream (any diaper rash type cream bought at a drugstore is usually a zinc cream). ... I also have a mud fever remedy cream that my vey made up for me at one point, if I can find it I will bring it to you. Scars and Souvenirs on this board and I would both caution you to try to determine that it really IS mud fever and not something else...is it on all legs, or only one??? Scars and Souvenirs and I would both be very concerned if it was on a white sock only. (Im reading your mind, Scars and Souvenirs!!!)

Ditto to everything Linea Farm says.
SJ, I have fungasol and will bring it and put it in your box for you to use until you get your own. I have Hibitaine, but its expensive stuff... if its not too bad try the zinc cream first... I may even have some of that here somewhere and again will put it in your box. I will fight my instinct to launch into the long lecture about Alsick Clover Poisioning, which which can come with symptoms that look like mud fever, because I dont think there is much alsick on the property (we checked very carefully before we moved in) I'll "lecture" you about that in person(lol!). I am out this morning... check your box for fungasol and zinc oxide as a start. edited to add...linea farm, we had a bout of alsick clover poisioning two or three years ago at another barn. In one horse, it manifested externally as mud fever on a white sock only. I bet the discussion is still on this board somewhere if you were at all interested. This message has been edited. I got some amazing cream from Dr Butlers Clinic. It was pretty cheap, and worked really fast. Can't recall the name, as it was a concoction that they mixed up specifically for the scratches.

Hi,
Remove all the scabs, dry and put a lot of Bag Balm 2 times a day. Within 3 days all the mud fever will be gone. Reaply Bag Balm for preventing. |

Hey LF: what happened in our case was the toxicity created by the liver damage causes extreme photsensitivity in the skin, especially white areas. So, really bad dermatitis results. We had one horse clearly ill, and at the same time were dealing with what we thought was mud fever on one white sock. With the one horse so ill, the horse with "mud fever" was tested and showed elevated liver enzymes indicating that he too was suffering from clover poisioning and that the "mud fever" was in fact acute dermatitis resulting from the photosensitivity. I will get off my soap box now. |

hello, i tell you i tried just about everything on my horse that had scraches which is basicaly mud fever and the only thing i found that works fanominal is marigold cream with tea tree oil and marigold powder its through www.vineherbal.com the number is 1-877-434-1031 she is awsome. this stuff is great will not dry out or iritate skin and will clear it up pretty fast. and yes try to keep it as dry as you can if you can keep him stalled for a week or so but if not like my baby who had it just try to go out a few times a day and dry it the best you can and put the cream and powder on at n ight before he goes to bed. well let me know what you think thank you, melissa
