Hi,

I have an older horse that I feel could benefit from a glucosamine supplement. He's at least 20yrs old and doesn't seem stiff at all; he loves being ridden. But I think it would be good anyway. What brand do you recommend? How much? he's a morgan so not big, eats 2xday sweetfeed (half scoop) w bran. Thanks!

I'm big advocate for glucosamine. The best stuff I have used is Corta Rx which I get from the vet. You can get a big bottle from your vet for about $350 and that will last about a year feeding 15 ml / day. You can also buy Corta Flx from most tack shops and wil pay about 50 for a small bottle which will last about 40 days as you will feed 30 ml / day as tack shps do not carry the concentrated format.

If you are looking for a cheaper option I suggest finding a gluc. supplement that has gluc, msm, and condroitin together as these are the ingredients that work best together to ensure the horse is in fact absorbing all the benefits of the supplement.

I feed either the Corta Rx or finish line (as this is the cheapest I've found) along with ICHO injections 1x/month (generic adequan 1/2 the price) to keep my boy in tip top shape and help in the prevention of the early onset of DJD.

Hope this helps!

I have an older horse at home that we put on a glucosamine/msm product and he seems to be doing well on that - he wasn't terrible before, but he does seem less stiff now. He's 32yrs old. Smiler
There's the "herbs for horses" supplements available from Horseworld & Greenhawk, or Pureform sells a nice one (Glucosamine plus) which is available from Horseworld & Apple - when they have it in.
I order mine online & it's shipped directly to me.
Smiler

I am a huge fan of the VIVA supplements. I order them online (they deliver right to your front door) at www.viva.catominc.com my friend was a vet tech and biology major, she looked into supplements and recommended these ones. theyre not a powder theyre a pellet so they get absorbed easily, and you notice results faster. Horses love them cause they have natural fruit juices added to them so they look and smell like candy. One of my horses has major leg issues and was very stiff in the back end. I couldnt believe the difference just a week later after putting him on these. He was moving much better and didn't have that lovely clicking in the back legs anymore. I recommened them to my sister for her older 22yrs old horse, he's now running around the paddock like a new man. Totally recommend this supplement.
