Hi, I have been advised not to use a flash on my horse as they are "cruel". Is this other peoples experiences?

I don't think they are "cruel" when fitted properly.
I just hate to see people crank them up as tight as possible. How can your horse relax his jaw when it has been clamped shut? I supose this person also thinks bits and spurs are cruel? ok, let me jump in on this. Why do we use a flash? It is to prevent a horse from opening his mouth while being ridden so he avoids the bit and/or puts his tongue under the bit.
If the horse is opening his mouth because of a badly fitting bit or isn't comfortable or in pain, then yes, a flash WOULD be cruel. In this case we are CAUSING more pain for the poor horse. However, if the bit is fine, the bridle fits well, and the horse opens his mouth anyway, as a habit or whatever, then, the flash is a SAFETY thing. Of course, as long as we dont do it SUPER tight (pinching skin or hair), and ensure that the buckle hasn't caught on anything, and the buckle isn't in the nostril groove, everything's good to go. We just need to be informed of why we use certain equipment, good and bad points. |

I agree w/ flame. Also make sure the flash is not too low on the nose to restrict breathing.
